Nicks’s story
We spoke with Nick Lawler, the Facilities Management Business Manager for the Small Works Department in Jersey, where he oversees the administration, operation, and Profit and Loss for the department. Nick works closely with the Chief Engineer and manages a team of 15 engineers and eight administrative staff, including an admin supervisor.
Nick participated in MHFA England® training to enhance his ability to support his team effectively and to further his personal interest in mental health.
"I was keen to do this to support my own team and have a personal interest in mental health. I have had various types of training over the years on mental health and counselling subjects."
His interest in mental health developed through his job roles over the years. These experiences provided him with a deep appreciation for mental wellbeing and the importance of having a supportive environment.
"I have a background as the head of services for Adults with Learning Disabilities & Autism Services and Drug & Alcohol Homeless Outreach Services so have always had a keen interest in mental wellbeing."
Sharing his journey through depression, Nick emphasised the importance of looking after your mental health and seeking the necessary support.
"I suffered with depression for many years which culminated in a mental breakdown. I believe that one should never take one's mental health for granted and always found ways to support this with myself and others."
However, after completing the course, Nick now consciously prioritises his mental health and regularly applies self-care practices to enhance his overall well-being.
"I meditate regularly through different spiritual practices and go to the gym regularly."
He highlights that MHFA training would be advantageous for everyone in promoting increased awareness and sensitivity to mental health issues, which are essential in leadership and support roles.
"I feel that MHFA would help everyone. One has to be open and receptive to mental health awareness which can be difficult for many."
Here at MHFA England, we offer expert guidance and training to give people the skills to spot the signs of poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation and the knowledge to signpost to professional help. Because we know that the right support can make a lasting difference. To workplaces. To individuals. And to society.
After completion of the course, Nick found the training comprehensive and valuable as it not only provided him with practical skills but also fostered a supportive learning environment among his peers.
"Overall the course had great content. Doing the course remotely one can lose the essence through lack of face-to-face content; however, I felt that this course managed to get past that and I found it overall very helpful and rewarding."
Reflecting on his journey, Nick shares the profound impact MHFA training has had on him.
"The MHFA training has been invaluable in my role and personal life. It has given me the confidence to address mental health issues openly and supportively, which has enhanced our team dynamics and overall wellbeing."
