Stuart's story

People Sat In A Line With Notebooks In Their Laps

Igniting open conversations around workplace wellbeing

We talked to MHFAider® Stuart, a marketing professional who shares his journey through mental health challenges in the workplace. Stuart emphasises the importance of seeking help and the critical role of mental health support in the workplace setting.

Stuart has recently completed the MHFA Refresher training with MHFA England®. This training has significantly strengthened his commitment to mental health support, providing him with the skills and knowledge to effectively support colleagues and promote a mentally healthy workplace.

"Most recently (undertaken) the MHFA Refresher course and previously the NCFE Cache level 2 Certificate in understanding mental health first aid and mental health advocacy in the workplace."

Stuart's interest in mental health began when he observed how society often mishandles mental health issues, leading him to feel a strong need for change.

"I saw how society can sometimes get things wrong and rather than support people with mental ill health, people can pick on those who are seen to be behaving differently or out of character. I felt strongly that this needs to change but wasn’t equipped to educate others or help those with mental ill health."

In his journey, Stuart reflects on how MHFA training has deeply impacted not just his professional life, but also his approach to self-care and aiding others.

"MHFA training has helped me to become aware of how I am feeling and taught me when to take action, and what action to take, to strengthen my resolve and avoid mental ill health. MHFA training has also given me the insight to spot the early signs that others may not spot and help people with their problems before they escalate. "

The self-care techniques Stuart learned during his training have become essential parts of his daily routine.

"I practice a lot of what I learned on the MHFA course. I recognise the link between a healthy body and mind and take regular exercise twice per week to relieve stress. Walking my dogs in the local park helps give me perspective on life’s challenges. Relaxation exercises, controlling my breathing, and meditation have helped when feeling stressed. Contact with friends and family gives me strength and confidence, and time to unwind. I also use an app called Headspace for advice, development and mindfulness."

Stuart passionately believes in its importance in fostering understanding and support for mental health, and the urgent need for societal change.

"Everyone will benefit from learning more about mental health first aid from the experts at MHFA England. It’s about understanding and helping others and yourself. Society needs to change to become more understanding of wellbeing and mental health and there is no better way to start than taking the first step by joining a MHFA England course."

Stuart's story exemplifies how MHFA England training can transform workplace environments and personal lives by promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and equipping individuals with the skills to support themselves and others.
