Tina’s story
Tina’s experience with MHFA® training has been transformative. She worked as an MHFA Associate Instructor Member to support her school’s pastoral programme and trained staff in MHFA across the wider trust.
"I was in need of mental health support and counselling early in my twenties, and I’ve always had compassion for those who struggle with mental ill health. One of the things I love about the MHFA course is how it equips people to support those experiencing or who may be developing poor mental health. "
"I also love that it promotes the need to be accepting, genuine and empathic – what great qualities – without which an MHFAider really wouldn’t be as effective in their role. Importantly, encouraging people to think about their own frame of reference and to be inclusive and non-judgemental are key to ensuring that the people they support can access the very best from MHFA training. I can quickly put aside my own frame of reference to consider the viewpoints and perspectives of others. Being able to signpost to helplines such as Shout, and as a volunteer for this Crisis text line myself, I know the value of supporting people who are developing poor mental health. "
"Recently, I have regularly been checking in on someone and signposting them to additional mental health and medical support. Whilst the road ahead is uncertain, they have much more help and support around them now. Additionally, through both my Youth and Adult MHFA training, I have been able to support and provide information to someone experiencing an eating disorder."
